Kenley Jansen experienced shortness of breath and an irregular heartbeat Thursday night, according to Dylan Hernandez of the Times, and is seeing a doctor today.

Jansen was on the disabled list in 2011 for an irregular heartbeat and began to take a blood-thinning medication. Ken Gurnick of MLB.com has more.

… “He had a little bit of flutters and shortness of breath like last year with the palpitations and his blood pressure was up,” said manager Don Mattingly. “He had trouble sleeping. Sue (Falsone, trainer) said it could be nothing, but she didn’t want to play around with it.”

Mattingly said he hadn’t heard of Jansen experiencing any problems since last year’s incident and added that Jansen is already on blood pressure medication and “not supposed to take any caffeine.”

“This is the first I’ve heard of it since the issue last year,” he said. …

Update: Jansen has been cleared to resume workouts, reports Tony Jackson of ESPNLosAngeles.com.

  1. Sounds like he’s back at practice today so that’s a good sign. Don’t want to take too many risks when it comes to the heart but fingers crossed he’s okay.

  2. I am hoping one of the youngsters takes LF from Rivera. Nothing against him but it would be nice for a young player to bust out and help the team.

    Looks like a keeper.

  4. Sounds like he may have micro valve prolapse. My fiance has that condition and has similar symptoms sometimes and isn’t able to eat or drink any kind of stimulant..no caffeine and surprisingly a bunch of random foods you wouldnt think would be off limits, like avocados. weird, i know.

    • My wife has it, though she’s not on the restrictions you’re describing.

To be pedantic, it’s mitral valve prolapse isn’t? Branson, the chauffeur, had it on “Downton Abbey.” That’s why he couldn’t serve in World War I.

I am trying to reduce my pedantry by 50% this season.

  5. Got my tickets for Camelback yesterday, The game vs. the Angels on the 18th is going to be packed full of fans!

  6. Kemp in the 2-hole.  Intriguing.

  7. You can’t make that man a closer! He’s got a heart condition!

Apparently Broxton was able to do a pretty good job at it without a heart and no guts.

RIP Harry Wendlestedt. Don Drysdale, Dick Dietz, and Herman Franks will all greet him at the Pearly Gates to continue their argument.

I was a Dick Dietz fan when he played for the Tacoma Sub-Gnats, but not after he graduated to the Gnats proper.

  9. Any time Dee Gordon is forced out at second base, I’m going to think “How did this happen?” or “What a waste.”

  11. Nice offense by Dodgers for two games in a row. Ethier is on fire. And Juan and Bison contributed homers today. Kershaw had few problems. Dee with a steal. It’s early and probably meaningless, but Dodgers seem in regular season form right now (while it lasts).

Charley Steiner, meanwhile, is not in mid-season form. Likable as heck, but he’s just terrible in his calls right now, anything exciting he calls nonchalantly and cluelessly, while a few dull things he got excited by…  hoping he’s just in spring training, too.

According to the boxscore, Kershaw went three innings without a K. Is that correct?

    •  Three singles, one walk, no K’s. Got plenty of offense from his team mates :)

    • Pretty good lineup he was facing, too. All Ranger regulars except for one, I believe. And Dodger backups did some damage against some pretty good relievers, for that matter.
