I feel privileged that I’ll be able to be home in front of the TV set today to see Vin Scully’s return to Dodger Stadium.
J.P Hoornstra of the Daily News has a quick blog post chronicling Scully’s reunion with the media this morning.
… “As God as my judge, I did not sleep one wink Saturday night,” Scully said, while sitting in the Vin Scully Press Box as the Dodgers took batting practice on the field below.
“You try not to cough because you know when you’re going to cough, you’re going to become hoarse. So I packed the pillows up to try and prevent myself from coughing. Well I cut down on the coughing but I packed the pillows up so much that I wasn’t sleeping. I went to the ballpark [a week ago] Sunday and I thought, ‘oh, Lord, if I can somehow get through this one.’ We did the game, [Chase] Headley hit the grand slam home run, the Dodgers lost the game and I went home and I was done. I could not have done anything from then on, almost until today.”
The bad cold that forced the 84-year-old broadcaster to miss the Dodgers’ first five home games of the season is gone, and Scully will be calling today’s game against the San Diego Padres on Prime Ticket.
It is Jackie Robinson Day, a fitting day for Scully to return, but more importantly it’s a day game.
“The doctors kept telling me if you go and it’s cold you could easily have a relapse or, more importantly, in your weakened condition you could pick up something else and then you’re really in trouble,” he said. “So that’s why I stayed away.” …
Eric Stephen of True Blue L.A. has more on Twitter, which I expect he’ll compile into a blog post shortly.

A whopping 5 minutes of agony for Tottenham. Pushing and shoving and kicking now (which is expected). Oh well.
Time for the good word from the pulpit followed by the good word from the pressbox.
BTW Chelsea scored again:
Tot 1 – 5 Che
Have a nice Sunday everyone.
Tom Jedrzejewicz
I wish they both could lose … although you have to feel for Spurs after the phantom goal put them 2-0 down …

Heavenly Father please grant Vin Scully the strength and ability to broadcast today’s game.
(and give us another great Dodger victory…)

Does anything beat this? Sunday afternoon with Vin and Kid K in a game honoring Jackie.
Jon Weisman
HIghest BA in Padre lineup: Andy Parrino, .222 (and Edinson Volquez, .500).
Michael Green
And as the rest of the post noted, he almost had pneumonia. That he did not need and we did not need. But Golden Tonsils sounds just fine today.
Jon Weisman
Kershaw has now made 119 consecutive starts without throwing a no-hitter.

How very uninteresting of him

A query: Does each team have somebody operating a sewing machine (or farm out the
job) to put “42″ on blank uniform jerseys before the season starts? How
does that work?
Anonymous
Seamstress for the band?
Linkmeister
Grins. Since the preceding line is ” L.A. lady,” that seems apt.
KT
Probably have it done at the begiining of the season due to the fact that they know it will happen…they just wait to see who is on team.
Anonymous
I think there’s one vendor for all the team uniforms so they probably just order a bunch made before the season in a variety of sizes.
KT
Let’s go Dee start it off
KT
Beautiful Bunt!!
KT
now it’s a double
Good eye Mark…Come on Matty

I wonder what San Diegans think about the Time Warner Cable behind home now. Time Warner isn’t carrying the Fox Sports channel that shows Padres game in San Diego.
KT
it never did Cox cable carried the Padres
Me being a San Diegan now loves the fact that FSSD carries the game…now I don’t have to have cox internet
KT
good play by the 1st baseman…base hit for Matty
Come on Dre
Anonymous
Dee didn’t score? (I am getting spoiled).
KT
probably should have but why get the 1st out at home
KT
Nice catch by Veneble…good sac Rivera
Come on James
KT
good inning guys…love it …the Claw with a 2-0 lead
Anonymous
There should be more steals of home on Jackie Robinson Day.
KT
Way to hold them guys
Jon Weisman
Milwaukee’s loss today guarantees three more games before the Dodgers face a team with a record better than .500.
KT
Nice Juan…way to start it off
Come on AJ
KT
Kershaw almost beat it out…good hustle
Come on Dee
Michael Green
That Hermanski story slays me every year when he tells it. I think it was on the same trip that Pee Wee and Jackie were warming up and Pee Wee kept saying, “Stand a little further away from me, would you?”
Anonymous
I can imagine how good this team could be with a good #2 hitter. I think this is the first thing the new ownership should work on–although not a higher priority than building back our farm system. AJ Ellis is almost that guy, but I’m afraid you need a bit of speed at # 2,
KT
I say 1st thing is signing Ethier to a long term deal, then the corner infielders, farm system and kershaw next
KT
good job by Ellis to catch that ball at the play at the plate
KT
MATTY!!!! of course I missed it because FSSD is having technical difficulties
Jeffrey Thomas III
Matty wasn’t lying when he said they created a monster. Beast mode don’t care!
KT
Good hit Dre
KT
good hit Juan…way to keep driving them in
Anonymous
I thought it was hard to hit dingers in DS?
Jeffrey Thomas III
And Petco.
KT
not during the daytime or nighttime in the case of Matty ^_^
KT
FSSD is still having audio difficultities but I guess they are waiting until commercial break to fix it so they don’t miss anymore action
Finally fixed…walking AJ to get to clayton…make it hurt clayton

Pilgrims, now’s your chance. On Tuesday there will be the annual celebration of Alexander Joy Cartwright’s birth (192nd this year) at Oahu Cemetery where he’s buried. AJ Cartwright IV will be one of the speakers, as will retired Honolulu newspaperman Jim Becker, who was in Ebbets Field the day Jackie first played for the Dodgers. The ceremony is open to the public.
Anonymous
Kershaw doesn’t have it today. At least his velocity looks about right. And he still is having a heck of a game–now that is a good pitcher!
Anonymous
I’m glad I’m not the manager here. I don’t know what you do with Clayton here—–But my instinct is you pull him, and try and find a reliever who has “got”it today.
KT
Come on DP
KT
And there it was
Dee is not having a very good day Dee-fensively
KT
Come on Josh shut them down
KT
Well no win for the Claw
KT
That was strike 3
Anonymous
That innings could have ended up a lot worse
KT
Come on Tony
KT
two weak swings for strike 3…Come on Dodgers
KT
That’s a way to get Matty up

I’ve got to admit I took a break because I couldn’t bear to watch If Torre was going to take out CK before or after he lost the lead–becaues it was obviously bound to happen. Turns out he did it half way in between. Now watching our offense it is hard to say if it’s good because they score mostly in the first three innings, or if it means after the fourth, they are done!
Linkmeister
Torre? What year are you in, son? ;)
Anonymous
lets get that lead back
KT
Nice Matty…come on Dre…get some runs back
Anonymous
I know its good, but does anyone feel a little let down by a measly infield single!! I think we are being spoilt so far this year!
Anonymous
There are so many stat. reasons things could be against the dodgers this game that I can’t feel to bad. As long as Clayton is just having an off day–no problem GO DODGERS–we are still in it!
Linkmeister
Luke Gregerson sounds like a name from a western novel. Juan Rivera sounds like the villain’s name in that same novel.
KT
good job Juan…Come on AJ
KT
Come on Dee make up for your deefense

Perhaps a combo of Dee Gordon scoring the winning run on a Matt Kemp hit would be an appropriate ending. Especially on Jackie Robinson Day! (Several innings from now, that is…)
Anonymous
What’s more unlikely: Dee being thrown out at first on a ball hit to the outfield, or Dee hitting a outside the park grand slam?
Anonymous
The first one – definitely.
KT
Nice catch Dee
Good inning Kenley
Anonymous
At least the Dodgers can afford to play as many innings as you want with such a light schedule early on(day off tomorrow) and carrying so many pitchers.
KT
way to go Mark
KT
What bad luck
Anonymous
I know its Kemp—but it is also after the 4rth inning.
KT
TRIPLE PLAY!!!!!!
Anonymous
Looks like it landed foul.
KT
On replay it landed fair
underdog
Yeah. I was totally confused about what had happened, just like the Padres. Not the prettiest triple play ever but we’ll take that sucker. ;) Head’s up D by the Dodgers.
Anonymous
Ha! Hope it stands.
Anonymous
Cool!
Anonymous
Bud out for the fourth out.
KT
did he get ejected…yes he did…just saw the replay
Anonymous
Let’s win this thing now!
Anonymous
Just tuned in & caught up –home plumbing project. Hearing Vin’s voice brought tears to my eyes.
Now to figure out wth just happened.
KT
Come on Juan……..let’s go home happy
Anonymous
3 more walks and we got this thing…
Anonymous
when is the last time we turned a triple play?
KT
1998 against Colorado
Anonymous
thanks
KT
NP…the padre announces told me
KT
Nice James
Anonymous
Well, home plate umpire got the call wrong but kudos to the Dodger infield who just played the game instead of playing umpire.
KT
Why…ball ended in fair territory..ball hit bat and nothing else
Anonymous
Dropped behind the plate and rolled fair (ump was screened out and looking at the batter in any event)
KT
no one touched it…if a bunted ball goes foul initially then rolls fair…is it fair or foul? answer fair ball unless touched by a player or bat or other object
Tom Jedrzejewicz
The end result appears technically correct to me. The ball hit nothing but bat, landed foul and rolled fair. The home plate ump threw his hands up, which was interpreted by the Padres as the dead ball signal, but the ball stayed moving. Whether that should have ended the play I don’t know. The Padres stopped, AJ Ellis didn’t.
Anonymous
Uribe really doesn’t look like he knows what he is doing. (but he gets it done).
KT
good bunt juan
4 wide to AJ
Anonymous
Who’s going to pinch hit?
Anonymous
I realize that we will probably have a stretch that’s almost as wretched as the Padres have had since the beginning of the season. That “triple Play” has to be the kicker. I hope I can bear it.
Jeffrey Thomas III
The only guy with the pants rolled up in homage to Jackie has a chance to win it.
Jeffrey Thomas III
Or Dee!
Anonymous
Nows the time for a hotshot hitter off the bench—like Manny Mota
KT
Another walk off walk?

I think the combo of Vin’s return and Jackie’s day was too much good Dodger mojo for the Padres to overcome today, is all I can say. :)
Deeeeeeeee-squee!Hard to top this start to the year. Now let’s just win the next road trip, and team’s in great shape.
Anthony Forkush
I am so excited I thought you wrote Vin’s comb over and Jackie’s day were too much Dodger mojo. LOL.

Hah! There’ll be hell toupee!

Vin’s best comment of the day “There is nothing like the steady drum beat of ball one to calm down a crowd”. Classic! The Mark Twain of Baseball.

Had to go out and miss the last two innings. Sigh.
Anonymous
I think we were amazingly fortunate today- but still had some heroes who claimed the day. I hope we remember the things that guys like Gordon and Loney bring to the game if they have bad streaks in some traditional areas. This is a team—Go DODGERS.
KT
Good game all…have a nice day
Adam Luther
Kershaw has not pitched under the lights after three starts and his next scheduled start is at 1:05 in Houston next Sunday. Won’t pitch under the lights until 4/28 at home vs. the Nationals.

The “triple play bunt” looked like a hit batter to me. Slowing my DVR down to frame by frame, I cannot tell if the ball hits the bat or not, but it sure does appear that it goes over the bat and hits the batter before falling to the ground… But that must not be correct, San Diego never even mentioned it and surely they would have.
KT
I also slowed my hddvr frame by frame and the ball definitely struck bat and nothing else. I was viewing my 65″ sharp aquos, which has extraordinary definition, from about 6 ft away. The sound of the bat breaking also proves that the ball struck wood
