Chad Billingsley provided something of a scare when he felt a sensation in his surgically repaired right elbow during his first rehab assignment Sunday, according to media reports, but Dr. Neil ElAttrache has examined Billingsley and said there is no issue.
From Ken Gurnick of MLB.com:
Billingsley returned to Dodger Stadium, where he was examined by Dr. Neal ElAttrache while the Dodgers were playing the Giants.
“We were concerned, but we got good news during the game,” Mattingly said. “Doc looked at it, and felt good about it.”
The Rancho Cucamonga start was one of five planned in Billingsley’s road back to the big leagues. It’s not known how this setback will alter that plan.
Craig Minami of True Blue L.A. saw Billingsley’s outing and spoke to him afterward.
“It wasn’t planned, just something didn’t feel right, so instead of pitching through it and maybe hurting something,” Billingsley said. “Right now my arm feels pretty good and I was really happy with the way I threw, was happy to be out there.”
We have a substantial article on Billingsley’s recovery in the April issue of Dodger Insider magazine.
Meanwhile, Josh Beckett, who threw a full bullpen session Sunday after a rehab outing Friday, is a candidate to start the second game of the series against the Tigers on Wednesday. As Gurnick notes, Hyun-Jin Ryu and Matt Magill are also possibilities for that game, which will follow a Dan Haren start Tuesday against 2013 American League Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer.
J.P. Hoornstra of the Daily News has more on Beckett.
