For a couple hours every five days, Julio Urías takes the mound under the spotlight, standing alone on the mound.

For the remaining 118 hours of each cycle through the Dodger starting rotation, (for however long he’s in it this season), the teenage rookie is just another Dodger teammate, spending his days and nights with players who are anywhere from three to 18 years older.

“That’s where that confidence has to come through — and has,” Dave Roberts said.

So what’s he been like?

“He’s quiet,” Roberts said. “He’s a good listener. He’s observant. He’s intelligent. He’s confident. He’s handled himself a lot better than I would have at 19. And the guys like him. I think that’s a very good barometer, in seeing how the players take to him, and they joke with him. They try to teach him, and he’s a great young man.

“His track record of performance shows that he should be here. And so he understands that he’s here for a reason and he’s here to perform. That’s what just makes him so special. There’s a reason why you don’t see too many 19-year-olds in the big leagues, handling himself the way that he does.”
