Double-A Tulsa right-hander Chase De Jong was named Pitcher of the Year in the Texas League, which also placed second baseman Willie Calhoun and outfielder Alex Verdugo on its All-Star Team.
De Jong, a 22-year-old acquired from Toronto in July 2015, has a league-leading 1.02 WIHP entering the season’s final weekend and the No. 2 ERA at 2.86. With 125 strikeouts (in 141 2/3 innings), he is within one of the overall strikeout lead.
Calhoun, a 21-year-old taken in the fourth round of the 2015 draft, is second in the league with 27 homers and a .485 slugging percentage, and is fifth in OPS at .810.
Verdugo ranked in the league’s top 20 in on-base and slugging percentage despite being the youngest player in the entire Texas League this year at age 20.
