Longtime Reds reliever and “Airplane” icon Pedro Borbon, whose son pitched for the Dodgers, has passed away at the age of 65 from cancer.
“He was always talking about that,” his son told The Associated Press. “A lot of people remember him by that. He liked that.”

Remarkable piece of footage from “Airplane” that you found, Jon.

so funny! I think I have used this scene a few times in my own life when trying to focus and or get my mind off something else.

Spectacularly original. Hilarious, to boot! Can I audition for the syringe?

Wonderful. As I recall, Lasorda managed Borbon in the winter leagues and told the story of going to take him out and Pedro throwing the ball over the roof of the stadium. Borbon was embarrassed and Lasorda asked if it was the first time he’d done it. Pedro said yes. Tommy said, well, you have two more to catch up with me.

I must have seen him pitch against the Dodgers 20 times, but when I read his obit yesterday, the first image that came to my mind was the Airplane! scene. RIP.

Wasn’t Borbon involved in that game where the Dodgers blasted 8 homers off Reds pitchers at Dodger Stadium in ’79? I think he gave up a few and then beaned a Dodger hitter, touching off a fairly vigorous brawl. I might be confusing two different games though. Always liked him.

May 25, 1979. I remember because it was the first game I ever videotaped and watched later. I had to attend a wedding that night.
The Reds pitchers were Seaver, Hume, Pastore and Tomlin. Seaver gave up 2 home runs and Pastore the other 5. According to the box score, no players on either team were HBP in the game.
