Root beer reviews: Route 66

With a $25 gift card to BevMo in hand, I decided to pursue a small but highly significant taste test of root beer. I bought several different brands and will be publishing reviews over the next few weeks. Here is the first:

* * *

Route 66 Root Beer has what I would call a classic non-mainstream taste – the sweet bite that you don’t get in an A&W or Mug. Goes down smoothly and unpretentiously, disappearing all too quickly.

Sampling date: July 14, 2012

Ingredients: Carbonated water, real cane sugar, caramel color, natural and artificial flavorings, quillaia, citric acid, sodium benzoate (preservative)

Nutritional information: 12-ounce serving, 160 calories, 0 grams fat, 28 grams of sugar

Bottling location: Lebanon, Missouri

      Love me some root beer, and BevMo one of the few places that stocks a large variety.  As far as mainstream goes Henry’s is hard to beat, Route 66 is a strong choice. Hires (hard to find out this way) and Dad’s some of the stronger semi-mainstream brews, most now made with the obligatory HFCS as a sweetener…

    A $25 dollar gift card from bevmo can get you two six packs of smithwicks and a 6 pack of harp with only a few bucks needed to cover the taxes and crv :)

    I like nothing better than a biting root beer to go with my fighting ham.

    Love this thread.  I really enjoy indulging in a good root beer.  Here in the Boston suburbs, I don’t seem to come across good root beers.  I still like the old favorites:  A&W and Hires.

  6. I like the cane sugar. It gives in a caramely taste that works well in root beer.
