This is a big honor, to say the least. The school of communications at Bradley University is being named after Dodger broadcaster Charley Steiner.
The Charley Steiner School of Sports Communication becomes the first named sports communication school in the nation. It was announced during Bradley’s 15th annual Hollywood Gala Reception at the Skirball Center tonight.
Noting that such sportscasters as Jack Brickhouse, Chick Hearn and Ralph Lawler all have Bradley ties, Steiner, a 1971 graduate, 1995 inductee into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame and 2010 commencement speaker, said this is the proudest achievement of his career.
“My career began at a time when the words ‘sports’ and ‘journalism’ rarely shared the same book, much less the same sentence,” Steiner said. “Over the years, of course, Sports Communication has morphed into a hundreds-of-billions-of-dollars-a-year industry.
“Bradley’s history can become a driving force into the future in ways we can’t even begin to project. Being a part of that process going forward, from the place where it all began for me, brings me an overwhelming sense of pride and joy.”
A formal dedication is scheduled to take place in March at Bradley.
“Charley Steiner is one of the most popular and well-respected sports broadcasters in the country, and the Dodgers and our fans are very fortunate to have him on our team,” Dodgers executive vice president and chief marketing officer Lon Rosen said. “What better way to honor the accomplishments of a true broadcasting legend, but by naming the School of Sports Communications at Bradley University after Charley. Congratulations Charley!”
