Righty reliever David Aardsma has officially signed a minor league contract with the Dodgers, becoming the 19th non-roster invite to Spring Training at Camelback Ranch, where pitchers and catchers are being welcomed today.
Aardsma, who turned 33 in December, tweeted news of his deal with the Dodgers on Sunday. He spent 2014 with the Cardinals’ Triple-A team in Memphis, allowing 40 baserunners in 35 innings with 36 strikeouts and a 1.46 ERA.
His last Major League season was in 2013 with the Mets, for whom he allowed 62 baserunners in 39 1/3 innings with 36 strikeouts and a 4.31 ERA
A first-round draft choice by the Giants in 2003, Aardsma had his best MLB season in 2009 with Seattle, where he had a 2.52 ERA and 80 strikeouts in 71 1/3 innings against 83 baserunners.
Aardsma’s biggest issue has been his walk rate, which sits at 5.0 per nine innings for his 306 1/3-inning big-league career.
If he pitches for the Dodgers, Aardsma will fly by Don Aase to become the first in alphabetical order on the Dodgers’ all-time roster. Last on the list for the Dodgers is Eddie Zimmerman; last for the team in Los Angeles (but not least) is Don Zimmer.
