Two years and seven months after he was signed, Alex Guerrero has been designated for assignment by the Dodgers.
The 29-year-old Guerrero has spent the 2016 season on the disabled list because of a left knee contusion. With his minor-league rehabilitation assignment expiring and no place for him on the active roster, the Dodgers have removed him from the 40-man roster, with 10 days to determine his fate.
In 243 career plate appearances with Los Angeles, Guerrero had a .251 on-base percentage and .414 slugging percentage with 11 home runs — five of those hit in April 2015, when he surprisingly became the National League Rookie of the Month. He would go on to hit four more homers in May, plus a memorable game-winning, ninth-inning grand slam June 2 at Colorado.
Guerrero’s next and ultimately final home run as a Dodger came July 31, and it was also a game-winner — a tiebreaking two-run shot off Hector Santiago of the Angels. Guerrero had a .214 OBP and slugged .270 after June 1, and never found a defensive position that made the Dodgers comfortable.
This month, Guerrero went 9 for 66 with two extra-base hits, two walks and 14 strikeouts in his combined rehab stint with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga, Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Guerrero walked seven times as a Dodger, making him one of three Dodgers to hit at least 10 home runs in his career and have fewer walks than homers, along with Andy Kosco (22 walks, 27 homers) and Don Demeter (32 walks, 34 homers).
The Dodgers officially signed Guerrero in October 2013.
