This isn’t even about the serial comma, which has a subjective argument that can support it even if the objective argument doesn’t hold up. This, from the current New Yorker profile on Donald Glover, is just an abomination.
A comma before an apostrophe. You have to be kidding. Not only is it ugly, it is completely unnecessary. No one will misread that sentence without the comma. You don’t need the comma to separate “Georgia’s” from “dreams,” because if you even attempt to read the final fragment of the sentence as “Georgia’s dreams come true,” the sentence becomes nonsensical.
I consider myself a stickler for punctuation, but the above exemplifies rules run amok. Please don’t do this.
