Clayton Kershaw has thrown exactly the same number of innings in 2013 that the Dodgers have thrown in August: 198 1/3. And the dominance for each is almost exactly the same.

Talk about raising the bar . . . then working to meet it!
Bob_in_Vegas
OT — There’s a story on the Fox Sports site speculating about Scioscia’s fate and it mentioned Donnie’s contract is up and would Mike come here. While I never blamed Donnie for the failure at the beginning of the year (it wasn’t as if HE wasn’t hitting with RISP). I would have welcomed Scioscia back in Blue.
But when I read that this morning, it seemed almost absurd. Sure, I disagree with some of Donnie’s moves, but this group of players was a train wreck into June and the Dodgers were even more of a laughingstock than the Angels (higher payroll).
Now they are a Team, with a turnaround of historic proportions. Again, it’s not Donnie up there hitting or pitching, but if he was being blamed for the train wreck, doesn’t he deserve some credit for the resurgence?
btimmer
From what I’ve read, the deal with the Angels is that Scioscia and DiPoto don’t get along and the plan is to get rid of one of them at the end of the year.
And if I were Jerry DiPoto, I’d be looking for incriminating photos of Arte Moreno about now.
When I watch the Angels now, I spend a lot of time going “Who? Who is that guy?”
SaMoDodger
Can’t blame Scioscia for signing Hailton instead of Greinke. DiPoto won’t last through november.
ASW1
Not likely – the types who like to rail against and blame the Manager, the GM, the Ownership always like to pile on when things are going bad. When things are going good, it’s “in spite” of Mattingly. When Colletti makes a good move (Ethier for Bradley anyone?), the Punto trade, picking up Nolasco, etc – he got lucky.
WBBsAs
I still think Mattingly’s a poor strategist, but the players’ performance has been so good that it hasn’t much mattered. I doubt that he would be missed, unless the owners went with some absurd choice like Ozzie Guillén.
nsxtasy
Given how the Dodgers have done this year, no matter what happens here on out, the chances that Mattingly will be rehired for next year are approximately 99.99999 percent.
WBBsAs
I won’t even bother to deny that.

>> The last pitcher to throw at least 300 innings with an ERA below 2.20 in a season was Jim Palmer in 1975.
Yes, but individual pitchers no longer pitch 300 innings in a season, ever since MLB teams went to the five-man rotation, which was around 1980, IIRC.
nsxtasy
Steve Carlton was the last pitcher to pitch 300 innings in a season. In 1980.
nsxtasy
As noted in this article, most teams went to a five-man rotation in the early 1970’s: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/news/20020813doctoring.shtml
So that was one factor in pitchers no longer pitching 300 innings. Another is the development of bullpen specialists such as setup men, etc.
Nowadays the league leaders in innings pitched are typically around 240-250. The last time anyone broke 275 was in 1988. http://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/IP_leagues.shtml
Jon Weisman
The point is, it’s kind of an amazing accomplishment to pitch 300 innings with an ERA that low. Pointing out that pitchers don’t pitch 300 innings anymore, which is relatively common knowledge, is beside the point.
nsxtasy
Then you didn’t need to qualify your comparison with that 300-IP threshold. The comparison could have been made with pitchers whose full-season ERA was that low, without such a qualifier. For example, an ERA of 2.20 for a full season would have been sufficient to lead the NL in every year since 1997 except one (2005, and that may have involved some “help”).
Jon Weisman
I was interested in the 300-inning plateau. If you want to do something different on your own, go right ahead. That minimum of innings was part of what I was looking to explore, so you’re wrong to tell me I shouldn’t have done it.
It’s a piece of trivia, okay? I’m not suggesting it’s the be-all and end-all of baseball history.
scooplew
Amazing set of pitching statistics. Why, even Marmol has been perfect this month. Regarding Jansen, one of the two earned runs that he has allowed since the All-Star break was set up by defensive indifference, which I despise. Anyone know when this entered into baseball (non)-strategy?
nsxtasy
I don’t know, but I HATE it when teams allow a runner to advance by indifference. It makes no sense to me. You’re always better off with a runner on first than on second, and if you have the chance to throw him out, why not do so?
scooplew
Precisely.
Bob_Hendley
I don’t particularly like it either but I understand the notion, which is that you are more concered about the batter getting on. Since you are not holding the runner the chances of throwing him out are pratically nil.
scooplew
My memory may be faulty, but before defensive indifference became the norm I don’t remember players on first, whose teams were trailing by two or more runs, trying to steal second in the 9th inning even if they were not being held on.
Bob_in_Vegas
Adding to all this is the fact that lately the Dodgers have not fared well after the ASB.
With this kind of pitching, it makes it easier to win!

Ryu with 89 pitches through 5, really settled down after first, and you pinch hit with two outs and nobody on? Why?
ASW1
Bullpen needs work – all of it, except Kenley
Jeffrey Thomas III
That makes no sense at all. Why not get one more inning from him? They’re trying to win a game not get practice innings for the relievers.
ASW1
These aren’t practice innings – you can’t have guys gathering dust for 4 days in a row in the ‘pen. Ryu went 5, he was down 4, and the ‘pen needed work – easy decision
Linkmeister
Besides, Punto has a better chance of getting on base than Ryu does.
Jeffrey Thomas III
With two out and nobody on, such an important at bat.

Dodgers have scored the majority of their runs lately with 2 out.

Punto was as likely to hit a grand slam there as Ryu.

I’m just looking at postseason in general. More is expected from Ryu . . . and he DID give it, the last four innings. Of course, the offense still has to score if you want to win, even if you pitch a perfect game.
