How does an oversized Vin Scully collectible stay hidden for nearly 50 years?
Gary Cypres, the owner and curator of the Sports Museum of Los Angeles, couldn’t believe his ears recently when he received a phone call from a collector in Texas, describing an advertising banner used at Union 76 stations in 1966 promoting the company’s Dodger record collection.
“I’ve never seen something like this before,” Cypres said. “I didn’t even know it existed.”
Cypres jumped at the chance to add another one-of-a-kind item to his exhaustive collection, which this season was on display at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley.

Like Brett Anderson did on Thursday, Brandon McCarthy is expected to pitch out of the bullpen for the Dodgers when they open their season-ending series at San Francisco tonight.
The relief appearances by Anderson (2 1/3 innings, five hits, two strikeouts) and McCarthy keep alive the chances that either could be added to the Dodger playoff pitching staff.
“We wanted to get a different look from Brett, for him to come out of the pen — it’s something he’s really not accustomed to,” Dave Roberts said after Thursday’s game, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Times. “His velocity was up. He was victim to some soft-contact hits, but his breaking ball was good. For Brett to come in … it was a positive outing for him.”
The Dodger playoff bullpen was already overflowing with candidates before Anderson and McCarthy slid from starter campaigns into the relief race, essentially trading with Julio Urías, who struck out five Thursday in three shutout innings of what appears to have been a tuneup to start Game 4 of the National League Division Series.

After Thursday’s game, Dodger play-by-play announcer Joe Davis bid farewell to Dodger fans for 2016, in words that were equal parts gratitude for his first season and a tribute to Vin Scully that hit just the right note.
Vin, of course, will handle TV chores for the final weekend of his 67-season career, with the broadcasts from San Francisco tonight through Sunday simulcast on SportsNet LA, KTLA and AM 570 LA Sports. All playoff games thereafter will be national telecasts, with the National League Division Series beginning on either Fox Sports 1 or MLB Network.

If Tuesday’s Vin Scully 65th anniversary replica talking microphone promotion reflected his big break into show business, the giveaway box would also include a 50-yard extension cord.
Fresh out of Fordham University in 1949, Scully was a radio reporter for CBS and assigned to cover the Maryland-Boston University college football game at Boston’s Fenway Park. Scully arrived at the press box expecting to sit in a booth. Instead, he was shown the roof, where an engineer sat at a little card table. There was also a microphone with a long cord.
