Happy Babe Ruth 100th anniversary day — get ready for his Dodgers (yes, Dodgers) bobblehead

LAD 2014 Babe Ruth Bobblehead (Farmer John)Today is the 100th anniversary of Babe Ruth’s debut in the Major Leagues. On July 11, 1914, the 19-year-old Ruth pitched seven innings for the Boston Red Sox in a 4-3 victory, allowing two earned runs on eight hits and no walks, while going 0 for 2 at the plate. Anthony Castrovince has more on Ruth’s big-league inauguration at MLB.com.

It’s a great day to unveil the September 9 Babe Ruth Bobblehead promotion, commemorating Ruth’s time as a Dodger coach in 1938. Tickets are available now. The giveaway is for the first 50,000 ticketed fans in attendance, and no, we don’t expect any delivery trucks to break down this time around.

Make your Dodger Stadium Memorial Day plans now

[mlbvideo id=”32699091″ width=”550″ height=”308″ /]

By Jon Weisman

Memorial Day is only a week away, so don’t wait to make your plans to spent the evening at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers are on the road this week, but soon enough, they will open their next homestand with the Cincinnati Reds on May 26, and it occurred to me this game might be worth a special mention.

If you needed more incentive than the above-mentioned Andre Ethier BBQ apron giveaway (free to the first 40,000 ticketed fans) or the chance to see Hyun-Jin Ryu at home for the first time since April, then there’s this: Lined up to pitch in the 5:10 p.m. game for the Reds is arguably the No. 1 contender to try to steal the National League Cy Young Award from Clayton Kershaw, 28-year-old Cincinnati righty Johnny Cueto. In other words, if the Reds rotation holds, Memorial Day will provide a prime time to size up the opposition.

With a 1.25 ERA heading into his Tuesday start at Washington, Cueto will provide a great challenge for the Dodgers. Among other things, with runners on base, opposing hitters are 6 for 60 with six walks and one homer against Cueto this year. He leads the NL with a 0.71 WHIP and is striking out 9.5 batters per nine innings.

The Dodgers topped Cueto the last time they met, on July 3, 2012, when Luis Cruz hit a tiebreaking double in the bottom of the seventh inning and later stole home. Yeah, that’s right.

Last year’s Memorial Day at Dodger Stadium brought one of the best games of the year, with the Dodgers rallying from a 6-1 deficit to top the Angels, 8-7. It was a great way to spend the holiday last year, and I’m looking forward to this year’s game.

Dodgers have MLB’s best promo items, says Sports on Earth

LAD 2014 Clayton Kershaw Bobblehead (Time Warner Cable)By Jon Weisman

Today at Sports on Earth, Howard Megdal ranked the top 10 promotions at MLB ballparks in 2014. Not only did the Dodgers grab the top two spots, but Megdal couldn’t even pick only one promo item for each spot.

2. (TIE) Dodgers May Promotions. I guess it shouldn’t come as any surprise that the team spending the most money on players, which saw a huge surge in attendance, is also offering the finest promotional items. After all, which sponsors are willing to pay to be included in the promo mix is dictated by how much their company will be seen. The April 6 Yasiel Puig Fathead looks pretty sweet. So does the classic April 8 zip-up sweatshirt. There’s a fleece blanket, a Clayton Kershaw bobblehead, and a Hanley Ramirez replica jersey, all before April is over.

But the second-best promotion is a tie between a pair of giveaways over three days in May. On May 8, the Dodgers will be giving away an inflatable chair. Now, I haven’t seen it. But let’s just take a step back and consider: You will walk into Dodger Stadium, and you will walk out with actual furniture. Then, on May 11, comes a Mother’s Day Clutch. Both Rachel and Mirabelle loved this item, not just because of the fact of it, but because it is awfully pleasing to the eye. Neither one is a Dodger fan, but, as Mirabelle explained matter-of-factly, “It’s just pretty!” …

Click on Megdal’s article to see what he put in the top spot. And you can see the Dodgers’ full 2014 promotional schedule here.
